About the position

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game seeks an 8-month, benefited Fisheries Technician to assist with resident fish management surveys in the McCall area. The successful candidate will lead a small crew conducting harvest monitoring, tagging studies, gill netting surveys, and stream surveys throughout the 2025 season. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain diverse experience in various fisheries sampling techniques. The McCall work area is next to some of the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48 states, providing ample recreational opportunities such as hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, and whitewater rafting.

Early April to Early December (not to exceed 1385 hours in a 12-month period)
Qualifications
Applicants are preferred to have a B.S. degree in fisheries management, ecology, or related field, or equivalent in training and experience. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license. Applicants must (with or without reasonable accommodations) be able to work in inclement weather for long periods, handle live and dead fish, hike long distances in rough terrain while carrying up to 50 lbs., and stand/work in cold water for long periods. Applicants must be willing to accommodate a flexible schedule.
Responsibilities
The technician will lead a small crew conducting fishery management surveys across various waterbodies in the McCall subregion and will manage the associated sampling data. The incumbent should be confident and comfortable leading a small team using common fish sampling techniques, including boat and backpack electrofishing, fish tagging, and various netting methods (e.g., gill nets and trap nets).

The fisheries technician may occasionally lead a small crew in remote, backcountry environments (without cell service). The technician must also be proficient in operating and trailering power boats and will be responsible for general operations and maintenance of equipment, boats, and vehicles. In addition, this position will assist fishery biologists with data summaries, analyses, and technical report writing.

The technician will need to demonstrate leadership abilities through effective communication and collaboration with supervisors. There will also be opportunities to assist other crews and work on different fisheries within the McCall subregion.
