About the position
The Idaho Department of Fish & Game Nampa Fisheries Research office is seeking (1) 8-month benefitted and (2) 4-month non-benefitted Fisheries Technicians to assist with our Idaho Salmon and Steelhead Monitoring and Evaluation Study. The work site is in Stanley, Idaho where Technicians operate rotary screw traps to capture juvenile Chinook salmon and Steelhead. Technicians also assist with Chinook salmon spawning ground surveys in the fall.

General Information
Stanley is in the heart of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area consisting of 756,000 acres of beautiful mountain scenery. The SNRA offers world class recreation opportunities such as camping, fishing, mountain biking, backpacking, canoeing and whitewater rafting.
This position is based out of the Fisheries Research office in Nampa though Technicians spend most of their time operating two rotary screw traps in the Stanley Basin. One trap site is on Marsh Creek, a tributary to the Middle Fork Salmon River that borders the Frank Church Wilderness. The second site is on the upper Salmon River at the Sawtooth Hatchery.
The work schedule is variable and includes weekends and holidays. A typical shift is eight days on with six days off. Technicians normally work by themselves for the duration of their shift. Housing, food and transportation are provided. Housing is not provided during days off.
Incumbents must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 60 pounds, with occasional lifting and carrying of up to 100 pounds for short distances, with or without reasonable accommodation. This position also involves working in cold water for long periods of time, often in variable and adverse weather conditions. Necessary gear for those conditions will be provided.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license. Proficiency in Windows-based software such as Word and Excel is essential for these positions. Experience following oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures. Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish and wildlife species. Experience recording data. Experience interacting with the public in a professional setting. Candidates must be able to work independently, be self-motivated, and demonstrate problem solving ability and safety awareness.

It is preferred that applicants have a BS degree in fisheries or related field, or the equivalent from applicable job experience and training. Individuals with experience in aquaculture, operating rotary screw traps, implanting PIT tags, and collecting and managing biological data from both adult and juvenile salmonids will be given preference. Experience towing and backing trailers, operating ATV’s and 4x4 vehicles, driving on snow and ice-covered roads, and operating chain saws, winches, and a variety of power/hand tools is desired.

Responsibilities
Technicians are responsible for maintaining and operating two rotary screw traps. Typical trap duties include collecting and PIT-tagging juvenile Steelhead and Chinook salmon, measuring and weighing fish, collecting genetic and scale samples, mounting scales for aging, recording biological information, data entry on a laptop computer, routine QA/QC of field data, and operating/maintaining field equipment, camp trailers and fleet vehicles.
Technicians will also assist with Chinook salmon spawning ground surveys in Stanley during August and September. This will require working long hours in addition to regular trap duties, walking long distances in and along streams, handling salmon carcasses and navigating by map and GPS.
