About the position

Incumbent will serve as the screw trap technician in IDFG’s Lemhi Effectiveness Monitoring Program in Salmon, Idaho.  This project monitors fishery response to restoration efforts in the Lemhi River basin to understand the effectiveness of various habitat actions, and help guide future restoration efforts through an adaptive management process.

Note: Housing is NOT provided. This is a benefited position not to exceed 1385 hours. Start and end dates are flexible.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a BS degree in fisheries (or related field), or equivalent in job experience and training. Applicants must be detail oriented and have the ability to work alone with minimal supervision. Applicants must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, pack up to 40 pounds for several miles, and walk up to eight miles a day along stream banks and trails. Preference will be given to individuals proficient at operating screw traps, PIT tagging, species identification, and handling juvenile salmonids. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
Note: Must accommodate a flexible schedule (holidays, weekends, nights), be willing to work for 10 consecutive days, willing to stay in travel trailers and/or camp in semi-remote areas, and work in adverse weather conditions.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include: Operating and maintaining three rotary screw traps, PIT-tagging juvenile salmonids (including ESA- listed fish), collecting biological data (weights, lengths, DNA, scales, etc.), and assisting with data management (recording, organizing, and error checking in multiple databases). Other specific duties of this position include, maintaining field equipment, operating a Bull Trout weir, redd count surveys, electrofishing, and assisting with regional fisheries management projects.
