Each year as August comes to an end, the first runs of spawning kokanee are a sign that fall is approaching. This is the time when biologists start scrambling to collect enough eggs to raise another generation of kokanee for many Idaho lakes. Kokanee are land-locked sockeye salmon that are prized among anglers in Idaho, as well as across many western states. Fishing for kokanee is becoming more popular as anglers take advantage of the great fishing in spots throughout Idaho. Idaho Fish and Game works hard to maintain these exciting fisheries. Here we provide peek behind the scenes to see a glimpse of what it takes to keep Idaho's kokanee fisheries going strong.
