Steelhead fishing remained good over the past week on the upper Salmon River. Angler effort dropped slightly from the previous week but remained higher than average for mid-November. The majority of anglers were observed downstream of Salmon in location codes 14, 15, or 16.

  • Angler effort upstream of Salmon was low. Anglers interviewed downstream of the Middle Fork in location code 14 averaged 14 hours per steelhead caught and 45 hours per steelhead kept.
  • Upstream of the Middle Fork in location code 15, interviewed anglers averaged 18 hours per steelhead caught and 28 hours per steelhead kept.
  • Upstream of North Fork in location code 16, interviewed anglers averaged 25 hours per steelhead caught and 47 hours per steelhead kept. Interviewed anglers upstream of the Lemhi River in location code 17 did not report catching a steelhead.

Currently the Salmon River is flowing at 1,520 cfs through the town of Salmon which is 116% of average for today’s date. The river’s visibility over the weekend was clear, and temperatures were in the low 40s.  - Brent Beller, Salmon Region, Fisheries Technician
