City of Rocks National Reserve

If you want a unique fishing trip off the beaten path - think about the area around Almo, Idaho.  If you like to fish small streams, South Hills tributaries like Almo Creek contain Yellowstone cutthroat.  If you have children and want to teach them how to fish - the pond at Castle Rocks State Park is a great location to catch stocked rainbow trout while viewing the scenic area.  You can also rent a cabin or try an archery range with life-sized animal replicas through Idaho Parks and Recreation.  See their website for availability.

Fall scenery makes this a special place from mid-September through October.  With an elevation of over 5,000', fall comes early to this country.  The vivid yellows and reds surrounding the rock formations make this a photographer's paradise.

Next door is the City of Rocks National Reserve.  Early emigrants moving across northern Utah and southern Idaho left their names and messages on the rock formations in anticipation of relatives traveling the same route and to direct future travelers.  You can still see their axle grease writing on the unique rock formations.  Native American pictographs can also be seen in several locations throughout the area.
