As snow melts from the mountains around McCall, various critters that make their home in these high alpine regions begin their breeding and feeding season. Idaho Fish and Game will be out in some of these areas this summer looking for some of Idaho’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need.
- Hoary marmots and pikas live and forage in grassy areas near rocky talus slopes.
- Black rosy-finches nest in cliff crevices and eat bugs and seeds from the melting snow.
- Mountain goats, flightless grasshoppers, and western toads are also on the list.
As you enjoy the mountains this summer, you can help by letting us know if you see or hear any of these species and giving us the GPS coordinates or a dot on a map! https://idfg.idaho.gov/species/observations/add
