Idaho Fish and Game is seeking comments on a draft update to the IDFG Strategic Plan. The plan was last updated in 2015 and serves as the roadmap to chart the goals, strategies, objectives and actions the Department uses to achieve the IDFG mission, enacted in 1938 by the Idaho Legislature.
IDFG Mission
“All wildlife, including all wild animals, wild birds, and fish, within the state of Idaho, is hereby declared to be the property of the state of Idaho. It shall be preserved, protected, perpetuated, and managed. It shall be only captured or taken at such times or places, under such conditions, or by such means, or in such manner, as will preserve, protect, and perpetuate such wildlife, and provide for the citizens of this state and, as by law permitted to others, continued supplies of such wildlife for hunting, fishing and trapping."
Since 2015, Idaho has seen a significant population increase, as well as the introduction of new wildlife diseases and invasive species. Combined with changing weather and proposed development of energy resources and mineral extraction, the Department is facing new challenges in achieving its mission.
In 2025, the Department conducted an extensive public and internal outreach process to gather input on what the department’s goals, strategies, objectives and actions should be in the years ahead to achieve its mission to “preserve, protect, perpetuate and manage” Idaho’s treasured wildlife resources.
Review the draft plan below and submit comments by December 24, 2025, at Midnight MST.
