Idaho Fish and Game

Wanted: Mountain Quail Sightings

idfg-staff
Idaho Fish and Game needs more eyes to look for a native game bird that has almost gone missing in recent years. The department is asking the public to report their observations of mountain quail. More detailed information on remaining mountain quail populations is needed as the department studies the possibilities for helping the quail come back. Posters will begin showing up around the state soon that show the bird and describe its unique appearance. Phone numbers for Fish and Game offices are listed on the poster, which was printed and distributed with the help of Idaho Power Company. Mountain quail are slightly larger than non-native quail species, approaching the size of partridge. A long, straight head plume distinguishes this quail, as well. The throat patch is chestnut rather than the black seen on California quail and vertical white bars are noticeable on the bird's sides. Mountain quail usually inhabit brushy slopes and draws and may be seen in forested areas. Mountain quail are no longer hunted in Idaho but were a popular game bird when they were abundant. Habitat changes seem to have led to a steep decline in numbers in many of the mountain quail's traditional haunts.
