Upland Game Bird Hunters Encouraged To Use Wing Barrels

LEWISTON - The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) reminds upland game bird hunters utilizing the Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area that they can help monitor the area's game bird population by depositing one fully feathered wing from their harvested birds into one of ten wing barrels placed along major travel routes in the area. Because the sex and age can be determined from the feathers found on the wing of the harvested birds, IDFG can use the wing barrel information to help determine the status of various game bird populations in the area. For example, the percentage of juveniles, yearlings, and adults provides information on production and survival rates in the various game bird populations. The information collected will help IDFG obtain harvest information and make determinations about the upland game bird populations, which will help improve management. Hunters are reminded that one fully-feathered wing or head must be left naturally attached to any dressed game bird, except turkey. Naturally attached parts are needed so enforcement and management personnel are able to identify the species and sex of the birds in possession or being transported.
