Idaho Fish and Game

Sight In For Accuracy And Ethics

LEWISTON - With rifle hunting season rapidly approaching, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game reminds hunters that hunting ethics begin long before going afield. Sighting in rifles is a good example. "By taking the time to prepare and become a better marksman, you show great respect for your quarry," said Richard Oliver, IDFG hunter education coordinator. "Hunters should practice shooting from a variety of distances to help prepare for the very situation that might be encountered afield." Hunters of all ages can improve their skills and prepare for the upcoming hunting season by visiting the Lewis and Clark Wildlife Club's Gun range located 25 miles southeast of Lewiston on the South Tom Beall Road. Range mangers will be on hand to help participants practice offhand shooting, utilize impromptu rests and improve accuracy. From Lewiston, head south toward Lapwai on Highway 95. Approximately one mile before entering Lapwai, turn left on Tom Beall Road. Head east and take the right at the "Y" onto South Tom Beall Road. The range is located on the left 3.5 miles farther down the road. Shooting range operation is 1 every week in the Moneysaver, in the Gun section. You can also call the Shooting Range at 843-2987, 24-hours a day for a recording of operating hours. Currently, the range is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., until increased demand requires additional days. Members pay $2.00 to shoot and non-members pay $5.00. Kids shoot for free and the range will furnish a .22 rifle and ammunition if needed. Hearing protection and eye protection is required. Targets and hearing protection are available at the range for a small fee. For more information, visit the club's website at www.syringa.net/lcshoot.
