LEWISTON - Youth hunters and first-time archery enthusiasts interested in pursuing game this year are encouraged to register early for one of four courses scheduled April through June in the Lewiston-area. An archery education course is scheduled for late March while one hunter education course is scheduled each month from April through June. Registration will begin at the Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) Office, 1540 Warner Avenue, on Monday, March 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Only a limited number of students will be accepted into the upcoming classes, and once the maximum number is reached, registration will be closed. An address, phone number, date of birth, social security number and an $8.00 registration fee is required for each student. "Hunters should register early in the week because the classes will fill fast, " said Kent Henderson, IDFG hunter education coordinator. "During the last registration, most classes were filled the first couple hours, so it's important to sign up early." First-time hunters 14-years or older can fulfill Idaho's course requirement by either completing the independent home study course available at all IDFG offices or by completing an Internet course available at the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA) website at www.ihea.com. Both courses are designed to allow students to do much of the course at their convenience and are ideal for busy students, shift workers, business travelers or students needing extra time to study. Both home study and Internet students must register for and attend a one-day completion course where they will receive Idaho-specific training and be required to pass the written exam, field and live fire exercises required of all hunter education students. The completion course will be offered at least four times each year in Lewiston. For further information on Idaho's hunter education program, contact Kent Henderson at 799-5010.
