Protected Birds Shot in Bonneville County

State and federal wildlife officials have found more than 40 birds apparently shot near Gray's Lake Outlet in southern Bonneville County. Law enforcement agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game are investigating the incident. The birds, mostly juveniles, were discovered in a marsh. All had broken bones and apparent gunshot wounds. It appears an entire brood of canvasback ducklings had been shot, as well as grebes, coots, and one ruddy duck. Investigators found a large quantity of empty rifle cartridges in the area. Wildlife agents say the killings occurred the weekend of July 22 and 23. A similar incident occurred July 30 near Wood Canyon in Bear Lake County, and also is being investigated. Killing waterfowl and other migratory birds is a violation of the federal Migratory Bird Act and Idaho law and is punishable by a fine of up to $15,000 and six months in jail. "The condition and location of the dead birds suggests illegal activity," said Scott Bragonier, Fish and Wildlife Service special agent. "We strongly urge citizens with knowledge about this activity, or other similar incidents, to come forward with information."
