Preparing young fishermen

JEROME - Warm weather and long spring evenings are giving Magic Valley residents a great reason to go fishing. But like most outdoor activities there are always a few safety precautions to take before heading out. Some of the most common events associated with fishing excursions, include: insect bites, scrapes, fishhook accidents, sunburn or getting cold. All the problems are easily fixed if the angler is prepared before heading out. A checklist of things to take, include:
  • Insect repellent containing DEET
  • Sunscreen
  • Small first aid kit
  • Rain jacket
  • Fishing hat
  • Snacks and water
  • Trash bag for cleaning up garbage left around the fishing area
A way to remember everything is to purchase a small fishing daypack to store the gear. Keep it by the fishing poles and tackle so when heading out it is easy to find. It is also a good idea to store a set of fishing regulations in the pack. The fish license should be kept in the angler's wallet or pocket. Some great places to go close to town are Dierke's Lake, Oster Lakes, Riley Creek Impoundment, Crystal Lake and many places along the Snake River. All have been stocked this spring and anglers are having great success.
