Long Gulch Pond Enhanced To Benefit Anglers

RIGGINS - In an effort to promote Idaho's fishing heritage, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game began enhancing the Long Gulch Pond near Riggins in December 2002. Initial improvements should be completed by mid-January 2003. Known as Box Canyon to many local residents, Long Gulch Pond is located between Riggins and Slate Creek, where a bend of the Salmon River was cut-off by construction of U.S. 95 in 1959. A small number of anglers have utilized the area in the past, but occasional fish kills were common during the summer months when water temperatures increased. Plans call for deepening the pond, construction of a fishing pier for handicapped anglers, a toilet, easier access to the pond's shoreline, improved parking and installing a screened culvert to reduce the loss of fish. Wetland enhancements are also planned in shallow water areas as funds become available. The pond is home to a small population of smallmouth bass and bluegill, but IDFG plans to regularly stock the water with hatchery rainbow trout. "In addition to better fishing, this area will be better suited for families looking to enjoy the outdoors together," Fish and Game staff biologist Jerome Hansen said. "And it would not have been possible with the support and cooperation of several agencies." The Idaho Department of Lands, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Idaho Transportation Department, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers all provided assistance, which allowed the project to become reality.
