Kids Catch More Than Free Fish

LEWISTON - Over 600 young anglers and parents got "hooked on fishing" at everal Free Fishing Day events held Saturday, June 10.
Seven events were held in the area where beginning anglers could learn and practice their fishing skills. Two pilot events held at Mann Lake near Lewiston and Spring Valley Reservoir near Troy included educational stations where anglers could observe live fish and aquatic invertebrates in aquariums, create fish artwork, and learn how to prepare and cook their catch. Contest winners were awarded fishing poles and tackle, and all participants could dine on deep-fried fish fillets.
"These events were a tremendous success," said Robert Hand, fisheries biologist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. "People had fun and learned new skills, but the real success was watching families enjoying the outdoors together."
Sponsors helping Fish and Game included:
Black Sheep Sporting Goods
Camp, Cabin and Home
Tri-State Outfitters
Pepsi Bottling Company
Rosauers
Pierce/Weippe Chamber of Commerce
Grangeville Lions Club
Three-Rivers Flycasters
Dream Catcher Outfitters
"Without volunteers and the generous donations from the sponsors, these events would not have been so successful," Hand said. "It's nice to see community groups and businesses come together to benefit kids."
According to Hand, it is never too early to plan for next year. Free Fishing Day will be held on June 9, 2007, and IDFG is looking for volunteers or groups to help expand events around the region. Contact IDFG at 208-799-5010 for more information.
