LEWISTON - Significant changes for the whitetail deer hunting season will be the focus of a series of public meetings hosted by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game in the next two weeks. Excessive numbers of whitetail deer on private property, concerns of the quality of bucks and the need for the continuation of the Clearwater deer tag will all be presented. Interested individuals can discuss the proposals and provide written comment at any of four open house meetings scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the following locations. Moscow: Thursday, Feb13 Fairground Exhibit Bld., 1021 Harold Grangeville: Tuesday, Feb 18 Senior Center, Hwy. 3 County Road Orofino: Wednesday, Feb 19 VFW Hall, 330 Michigan Ave. Lewiston: Thursday, Feb 20 Community Center, 1424 Main Street Potential changes to elk seasons would be implemented to accommodate some of the potential whitetail management options. These changes would consist of a change in the timing of the A-Tag muzzleloader hunts in the Dworshak and Elk City Zones and also the controlled antlerless hunt in the Dworshak Zone. Proposed changes to the black bear and mountain lion seasons were not available at press time. "We hope to hear from as many hunters as we can," IDFG wildlife manager Jay Crenshaw said. "There are some major changes being proposed, so we hope that hunters attend to learn more about the various options and then provide their comments." The open house format allows participants to come and go during a three-hour period and visit with IDFG personnel about wildlife issues. Written comments collected will be presented to the Fish and Game Commission at their March meeting, where final action will be taken. Individuals with disabilities may request meeting accommodations by contacting Mike Demick at IDFG at 799-5010, prior to February 13, 2003.
