Fishing tips for kids

JEROME - Looking for something fun to do over the weekend or spring break, go fishing. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has stocked most of the area waters near Twin Falls. Young anglers can have a good time fishing Dierkes Lake, Crystal Lake or Oster Ponds. Each of the ponds offers easy access for young legs. Gear is the next big item before heading out. For youth, it is best to start with a closed-face reel. This type of reel is easier for small hands to cast and also helps reduce the number of tangles children tend to get in their lines. Next, anglers need a one to two inch bobber, split shot sinkers, swivels and some size six or eight hooks. Tie the swivel on the end of the line and place a hook with pre-tied leader on it. Place one or two split shot sinkers about a foot above the swivel and then place the bobber on the line about two foot above the sinkers. The final step is bait. Generally the top choice is a night crawler, but Powerbait, corn, marshmallows or cheese can also work. Youth over the age of 14 need to purchase a fishing license for $12.50, adult licenses are $23.50. Adults need to have a fishing license when helping younger anglers. The final step is to pick up a copy of the 2004 - 2005 fishing regulations and then just go out and have fun.
