LEWISTON - To improve wildlife habitat in the Benton Meadows area of the Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game will offer a firewood sale the first three weekends of June beginning June 4th. Permits are being sold at the IDFG Clearwater Regional Office, 1540 Warner Avenue. The permits will be valid from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on June 4-6, 11-13, 18-20th. The permits will cost $10.00 per cord with a two-cord minimum, and will include a map to the cutting site. All participants must check in with the attendant on site. White fir, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine and red fir will be removed from the 10-acre site. The firewood will be sold from green and dead logs that have been cut and felled. The available tree species consist of approximately 60 percent grand fir, 15 percent Douglas fir, 10 percent lodgepole pine, and 5 percent western larch. Sizes range from 3 to 20 inches in diameter. The firewood sale will help restore the ponderosa pine and Douglas fir cover types in the area, which are the preferred habitat for wildlife including mule deer, blue grouse, wild turkey and Pileated woodpecker. For more information, please contact IDFG at 799-5010.
