Idaho Fish and Game

Feds OK 38-day Canvasback Hunt

idfg-staff
Idaho waterfowlers might have a chance to take a few canvasback this fall after all. Idaho waterfowl hunting rules for this season are expected to be approved by the Fish and Game Commission next week. Department recommendations for duck hunting were made with the understanding that there would be no hunting of canvasback this fall because of steadily declining numbers. However, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has decided to allow states a 38-day canvasback season. This unprecedented "season within a season" would come within the 107-day framework authorized by Fish and Wildlife for other ducks. The 38-day season cannot be split. The Idaho Commission meets August 8-10 in Driggs. Before then, comments will be taken on options for canvasback hunting and added to public comment already given on the rest of the department recommendations. Idaho waterfowl program manager Tom Hemker said "We know this is not much time for public comment but the timing of the federal action left us with a short window before our Commission meets." Any of four options suggested by the department can be checked or a different option offered on the Internet web page at http://www2.state.id.us/fishgame/news/NewAdditions/updates.htm or by contacting Fish and Game offices.
