Idaho Fish and Game

Elk Shot and Left to Waste

idfg-mcoleman
A cow elk was found dead by snowmobile riders near the Blackfoot River Road off Wolverine Canyon in Unit 69. The animal apparently was shot sometime between late morning and 12:30 pm. on Friday, December 22. Idaho Department of Fish and Game conservation officers were able to recover evidence from the scene that will help with the investigation, but as always, the public is encouraged to come forward with any information. Elk season is closed in Unit 69. The shooters will be facing charges of hunting during closed season as well as waste of an animal. The elk was salvaged and meat was donated to a needy family. This case is another event in a rash of elk waste cases in southeast Idaho this year. Anyone with information about this case or other game violations may contact the southeast regional office of the Fish and Game in Pocatello at 232-4703 or call the Citizens Against Poaching Hotline at 1-800-632-5999. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward if the information leads to a citation.
