Contact: Joel Sauder, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, 208-799-5010 MOSCOW - The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), in conjunction with the Nez Perce Tribe, the Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute, Palouse Audubon Society, and the Moscow Food Co-op invites the public to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 13. "Migratory birds are some of the most beautiful, observable, and remarkable wildlife that we have in Idaho," says Joel Sauder, Regional Nongame Biologist for IDFG. "International Migratory Bird Day is a great time to learn more about their natural history and conservation." Events are planned in Moscow and Lewiston where bird enthusiasts of all ages and abilities can learn about the migratory birds recently returned and en route to our region. While all species of migratory birds are part of the celebration, this year's theme is "Boreal Forest: bird nursery of the north." Activities begin at Friendship Square in Moscow (in conjunction with the Farmer's Market) and will last from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The celebration continues at the Lewiston Center Mall from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Free organic, shade-grown coffee will be available courtesy of the Moscow Food Co-op. The Washington State University Raptor Club will be on hand at both locations with live birds and demonstrations. International Migratory Bird Day is an annual event that focuses attention on migratory birds that travel between wintering grounds in Mexico, South and Central America, and the Caribbean and nesting habitats in North America. It is an opportunity to celebrate and support migratory bird conservation.
