by Gary Hompland, Regional Conservation Officer Question: "I intend to hunt the short-range weapons hunt for deer in big game unit 53 with a muzzleloader or shotgun. Can I put a rifle scope on the shotgun or muzzleloader?" Answer: Yes. Many of the specialized rules for muzzleloader and archery equipment when used for big game hunting are relaxed when these weapons are used during short-range or any-weapons hunts. During short-range weapons hunts and any-weapons hunts, muzzleloaders may be used and can be equipped with scopes and set up with the 209 ignition system. Scopes are also legal on shotguns, crossbows, and archery equipment when used during short-range or any-weapons hunts. Like general big game hunting rules, scopes must not utilize any electrical battery power. During short-range or any weapons hunts, muzzleloaders must be at least .45 caliber for deer and antelope and .50 caliber for elk. Shotguns must be loaded with slugs or 00 Buck or larger shot. Arrows and crossbow bolts must have a combined weight, including shaft and broadhead of 400 or more grains and must be longer than 12 inches.
