Ask the Conservation Officer (CO)

by Gary Hompland, Regional Conservation Officer Question: "Is the license sales system going to work through the controlled hunt application period this year?" Answer: You've asked the million dollar question. As in past years, we hope so. To answer this question honestly, you have to understand the company that designed the system is nearing the end of their contract. They are responding more slowly and have fewer people dedicated to helping the Department of Fish and Game with computer problems. Their contract has been extended by a short while, but they are not likely to be involved in the upcoming new computerized sales system. The Department has developed some contingencies to help controlled applicants if the computer system goes down, but the Department is asking people not to wait until the last minute to purchase licenses or apply for controlled hunts. Sportsmen must keep in mind a license system failure could also impact your opportunities to purchase hunting and fishing licenses for the Memorial Weekend Holiday. If you're unable to visit an Idaho vendor to purchase your hunting or fishing licenses, you can make the purchases with a credit card by calling the toll free numbers listed in Fish and Game brochures (1-800-554-8685 or 1-800-824-3729). You can also purchase a license by credit card via computer at the Department website listed below. Controlled hunt applications can also be completed by credit card at the toll free telephone numbers. If you purchase a license over the internet you must first wait for your hunting license in order to apply for controlled hunts. With a little planning, purchasing hunting and fishing licenses and applying for controlled hunts this year will be a breeze. If you have any further questions you may call the Magic Valley Regional Office of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game at (208)324-4350 or e-mail us at the Fish and Game web site at http://fishandgame.idaho.gov.
