About the position

The Pocatello Regional Office is seeking a Fisheries Technician ($17.32, benefitted) to join the fisheries management team for the 2025 field season. This position will primarily focus on maintaining and repairing fish screens throughout the Bear River drainage. This position will require good working relationships with water users and the public. Office work will extend into the winter. Applicants may apply through April 7, 2025, but the announcement may close early if qualified candidates are found. 

General Information
Fieldwork generally consists of 40-50 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, though night, weekend, and holiday work will be required at times. Some duties will require overnight camping in remote settings, camping equipment and groceries will be provided on these trips. With or without reasonable accommodation, incumbents must be able to hike up to ten miles a day over rugged terrain carrying a large backpack; stand and work in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; handle live and dead fish, lift and carry equipment weighing up to 60 pounds with occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in rough terrain and work in difficult weather conditions.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications require the incumbent has some knowledge of identification, life history, anatomy, and ecology of fish species, and a valid driver's license.
Preferred qualifications include but are not limited to: a mechanical skills; excellent data collection and management skills, independent decision making and communication skills, experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; experience trailering and operating an outboard and/or jet motorboat; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems, experience identifying and sampling fish; ability to navigate with topographical maps/GPS; good handwriting skills, experience leading crews and working independently.

Responsibilities
Throughout the irrigation season (April 15th – October 15th), this position will primarily be responsible maintaining and repairing fish screens. These responsibilities will require knowledge of how to repair chains, bearings, drive shafts, etc. on the fish screens. During this same period, this technician will assist with backpack electrofishing on streams and boat electrofishing on rivers. This technician will be responsible for processing fish and collecting biological data. Other duties will include tagging fish with T-bar anchor tags or PIT tags, entering data into the statewide database and a fish screen database, operating, maintaining and trailering boats and other equipment and instructing inexperienced seasonal staff in sampling protocols. The technician will be responsible for data collection and management, as well as maintaining a variety of motorized equipment.
