Fisheries Technician (Anadromous Fin Ray Field and Lab Technician)

About the position

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a temporary 8-month, full-time benefitted fisheries technician to work in the anadromous fin ray ageing laboratory at the Nampa Fisheries Research facility in Nampa, ID. This position requires week long field collection activities in August and September, often in remote areas. The remainder of the position (generally through February or early March) is laboratory work. 

General Information
Successful applicants will collaborate with a partner(s) in the field to conduct Chinook salmon carcass and redd surveys in Idaho streams. Carcass sampling will be the main focus for these positions. Carcasses will be sampled for fin ray ageing structures, genetic tissues, and otoliths. Data collection will include length measurements, markings, sex, GPS waypoints, etc. Applicants must be able to carry gear for long daily periods in remote back country locations and backpacking may be required. Overnight travel for weekly periods (typically Monday-Friday though weekend work may be necessary) is required during August and September. Camp groceries, cooking and camping equipment will be provided during the field portion of employment (August – early September). While in the field the incumbent will be camping, either in tents or enclosed camper trailers depending on the situation. No housing or food will be provided during the lab portion of this seasonal position.
Once field work has concluded, applicant will work with a partner in the laboratory to prepare (dry, clean, cut, mount, and image) and analyze (age) Chinook salmon fin ray samples. Many of the tasks performed in the laboratory are repetitive, so candidate must be self-motivated.
Qualifications
Applicants with knowledge of anadromous fishes and previous ageing (and/or growth pattern recognition) experience with anadromous fish will be given preference.
Individual must be able to work well without direct supervision, follow protocols effectively, be organized, and be extremely detail oriented.
Experience driving full sized pickups, hauling and backing trailers, and basic vehicular maintenance is preferred. Experience towing, backing, and maintaining recreational camping trailers is preferred. Experience with backcountry hiking and safety is also preferred.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include (but are not limited to): performing spawning ground surveys; collecting samples from Chinook salmon carcasses; preparing and analyzing fin rays; organizing and entering data into a database.
Additional tasks include organization and storage of samples, conducting routine data checks, and preparing field kits for sample collections.
