South Fork Salmon River, chinook salmon, litter, volunteers

Six volunteers, the president of the local Trout Unlimited chapter and two Fish and Game staff spent a  day cleaning up litter, weeding, and watering plants along a popular 10 mile fishing stretch of the South Fork Salmon River. Not a glamorous job, but these volunteers were up to the task.

This stretch of river was selected as part of a Fisherman Access Trails project involving the Payette National Forest, Nez Perce Tribe, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and Trout Unlimited. Trail improvements, site restoration with native plants, log railings, and signage were added to enhance this area that is well used during the Chinook salmon fishing season.  Volunteers picked up approximately two cubic yards of litter and removed a few thistle patches as well as watering newly planted shrubs to help prevent erosion in the area of the new trails.

After a long day of work, the crew stopped by the S.F. Salmon Fish Trap to learn more about IDFG’s salmon spawning operations and to see some monster fish. Staff there were eager to show us around which topped off an already great day on the river.  Thank you volunteers!
