idfg-staff
A third female mountain lion has been taken from the combined hunt area of game management units 43 (Big Soldier), 44 (Little Soldier), 48 (Big Wood) and 49 (Little Wood). This cat was harvested on Sunday, January 21 and reported to the Department of Fish and Game the next day. According to regulations, the harvest season for cougar in those four units officially ended the afternoon of January 22, 2001. As of Tuesday, January 23, 2001, a dog-training season for mountain lions is now in effect and will run through March 31, 2001 for those four units. During a dog-training season, lions may be pursued and treed, but they may not be captured, killed or possessed. Anyone wishing to participate in this dog-training season should consult the Idaho 2000 Big Game Seasons regulation brochure for details and requirements of this activity. To find out if the female lion quota has been met and the harvest season closed in a particular unit, call 1-800-323-4334 for information.
