About the position

Sampling juvenile anadromous salmonid emigrants is an integral part of monitoring threatened populations of salmon and steelhead. The individuals chosen for these positions will work in rotating multi-day shifts to operate two rotary screw traps. One is located at the University of Idaho's Taylor Ranch Field Station, within the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and the other is on the South Fork Salmon River. These positions are non-benefitted, with a 5-month term of employment.

General Information
Employee will maintain a juvenile fish trap at either the University of Idaho's Taylor Ranch Field Station or on the South Fork Salmon River. Access to Taylor Ranch is by charter plane, with flight costs paid by the department and the SFSR can be accessed by road. Per diem and housing is provided while on duty. Duty schedule can vary from 5 to 14 days on followed by 3 to 10 days off. Employee will also be expected to conduct angler surveys and Chinook spawning ground surveys. Qualifications
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, and have completed some college-level coursework in fisheries, ecology, biology, or other related field. Proficiency in Windows-based software such as Word and Excel is essential for these positions. Experience following oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures. Some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish and wildlife species. Experience recording data. Experience interacting with the public in a professional setting. Candidates must be able to work independently, be self-motivated, and demonstrate problem solving ability and safety awareness. Individuals with experience in the above listed activities, and experience working independently will be given preference. Preference will be given to individuals that possess a B.S. degree in fisheries, ecology, or a related field.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Handling, identifying, and PIT tagging juvenile salmonids
- Managing databases
- Maintaining the trap and all associated equipment
- Conducting angler interviews
- Assist with Chinook spawning ground surveys
Other duties include:
- Assisting with related fisheries research and management activities (e.g., gill netting, electrofishing, conducting standard steam and lake surveys)
