About the position

The Department is seeking a Fisheries Technician to work on multiple projects including Anadromous Fisheries Research (40%- rotary screw trapping and angler surveys), Fisheries Management (20%-fish population surveys, resident angler surveys, etc.), and Fishing and Boating Access (40%-improvement and maintenance). The McCall work area is adjacent to the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48. Recreational opportunities include hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, and whitewater rafting. This position is benefited, with an 8-month term of employment.

General Information
Applicants must (with or without reasonable accommodations) work independently in inclement weather for long periods of time, handle live and dead fish, be able to hike long distances in rough terrain while carrying up to 50 lbs., stand/work in cold water for long periods of time, and lift/carry up to 60 lbs. Applicant must be willing to accommodate a flexible schedule and stay in communication with regional staff.
Qualifications
It is preferred that applicants have a B.S. degree in fisheries management, ecology, or related field; or equivalent in training and experience. The ability to maintain a positive attitude and uncompromising work ethic through uncomfortable conditions is very important. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities
In the spring, employee will maintain a juvenile fish trap at the University of Idaho's Taylor Ranch Field Station, located within the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Access to Taylor Ranch is by charter plane, with flight costs paid by the Department. Per diem and housing is provided while on duty. Duty schedule while trapping is typically 14 days on followed by 8 to 10 days off but can vary. Weekend and holiday work is necessary. The incumbent will also conduct angler surveys for two Chinook fisheries and assist with spawning ground surveys in the fall when needed. Primary responsibilities during the summer and fall months will mostly be focused on access and resident fisheries work. The schedule during this time will typically be 5 days on and 2 days off but can vary.
Primary responsibilities as a trap tender for anadromous program include (March-May):
- Working the fish trap independently
- Handling, identifying, and PIT tagging juvenile salmonids
- Managing associated databases
- Conduct angler surveys for two Chinook salmon fisheries
- Assist with Chinook salmon spawning ground surveys

Primary responsibilities as an access/resident fish technician (May-November):
- Work to maintain and improve local fishing and boating access sites
- General maintenance and repair activities for fence, signs, boat ramps, and camping areas
- Maintain and work kokanee weir
- Assist with fishery management surveys in various water bodies throughout the region when needed (e.g., gill netting, electrofishing, conducting standard steam and lake surveys, conducting angler interviews)
- Work in both front-country and back-country areas (back-country work will involve hiking and camping for several days at a time)
- Work independently and as part of a crew
