About the position

The Clearwater Region is seeking four temporary Fishery Technicians (3 positions benefitted; 1 position non-benefitted) to assist with a project monitoring and evaluating the endangered wild steelhead population in the Potlatch River of north-central Idaho. The Potlatch River contains the largest population of wild steelhead in the lower Clearwater River basin. The monitoring project is designed to test the effectiveness of stream restoration efforts on increasing the freshwater production of wild steelhead in the Potlatch River basin.

 

Named after famous explorer Meriwether Lewis, Lewiston has been voted as THE #1 recreational town in America by Outdoor Life magazine. Its location provides year-round access to world class hunting and fishing opportunities, top whitewater rafting, endless camping and wilderness experiences, and is referred to as the “Gateway to Hells Canyon”, the deepest river gorge in North America!

General Information
With or without reasonable accommodations incumbents must be capable of working long hours in various and often inclement weather conditions, hiking steep and/or slippery terrain, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 60 lbs., operating traps/weirs during high flow conditions, and occasionally working at night. The work schedule will be highly irregular at times and includes occasional weekend work and numerous overnight camping trips in the field. Food is provided during all overnight trips, and some day trips. Valid driver’s license required.

Important Note: the non-benefitted position requires a mandatory 1-month layoff during the employment period. No housing provided.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or related field, or equivalent experience and training is preferred. Individuals with good data management skills, previous experience implanting PIT tags, experience with Microsoft Excel, and experience working with adult and juvenile anadromous salmonids may be given preference. Successful candidates must be able to work independently and in a team setting, follow established sampling and data entry protocols, and demonstrate a high degree of initiative and problem-solving ability. Applicants must be able to interact with the public in a positive and professional manner.

Dates needed: Late January/early February 2025 – late October/early November 2025 (Dates somewhat flexible); all 4 positions provide up to a maximum of 1,385 hours worked.
Responsibilities
These positions provide an incredible opportunity for working with a wide variety of fisheries techniques. This includes operating and maintaining juvenile rotary screw traps, adult fish weirs, backpack electrofishing, PIT tagging, radio telemetry, assisting with Chinook salmon spawning ground surveys, conduct stream habitat and water quality monitoring, and help with implementing and maintaining stream restoration projects. Successful candidates will also assist with other projects throughout the Clearwater Region and complete additional duties on an as-needed basis. The benefitted technician positions will require supervision of field crews throughout the season.
