With the changing of seasons, many people are thinking of ways to enjoy the beauty of a cool autumn day. How about exploring a Wildlife Management Area where you can hunt, fish, trap and view wildlife? You might just find a new favorite spot.

Fish and Game owns 31 WMAs across Idaho ranging in size from 275 to 85,000 acres. These areas are managed to help wildlife when they need it most, like providing winter habitat for mule deer or nesting habitat for waterfowl. Because of this special mission, some WMAs are closed to protect wildlife during their most vulnerable times. To find locations, maps and information on Idaho’s WMAs check out our webpage

To provide additional hunting opportunities, Fish and Game stocks pheasants on many WMAs and other properties. Stocked areas are wonderful places to take youth or those new to hunting. This year 24 sites will be stocked with about 37,000 birds. Information on where and when birds are being stocked can be found on our website. The exact date of stocking is not listed, but you can discover the week stocking is planned along with the number of birds being stocked.

There are a few things to keep in mind while hunting areas where pheasants are stocked. Along with a valid hunting license, hunters 18 years or older need to purchase an Upland Game Bird Permit. Hunters are also required to wear at least 36 square inches of hunter orange above the waist. A hunter orange hat will meet this requirement. Be sure to review the Upland Game, Furbearer and Turkey Seasons and Rules booklet for more details on pheasant hunting in stocked areas.

WMAs may become busy at times, especially when pheasants are stocked. Please be courteous to fellow recreationists. This will help ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience.
