Public comments sought on removal of goose hunting closure near Burley

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game would like to gather public comments on a proposal to possibly eliminate the goose hunting closure on the Snake River upstream of Milner Dam near Burley.

milner goose closure map

Decades ago, Fish and Game closed this area to goose hunting to provide migrating goose populations a place to stop over and not be hunted to meet a management objective to keep migrating geese around longer for hunting. Goose populations at the time were much lower than current populations, which have increased substantially over the past several decades.

The area upstream of Milner Dam is currently closed to goose hunting, but is open for duck hunting and has been for decades. Removing this closure may provide additional goose hunting opportunities.

Fish and Game will hold a negotiated rule public meeting to receive input about the proposed change at:

  • Burley - March 7, 2017, 6 p.m., Best Western Inn, 800 N Overland Ave.

If you are unable to attend this meeting, you can read the full proposal and provide comments online by visiting Fish and Game’s webpage at https://idfg.idaho.gov/about/negotiated-rules.

Comments will be accepted through March 22, 2017.
