About the position

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a lead Fisheries Technician to serve as part of our regional fisheries management crew. The incumbent will be responsible for leading a small crew conducting various field projects and fishery surveys on streams and reservoirs in the Magic Valley Region. This position includes benefits with a total of 8 months of employment.

Qualifications
It is preferred that applicants have or be working toward a B.S. degree in fisheries management, ecology, or related field; or the equivalent in training and experience. Applicants should have some knowledge of: life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species; identifying various fish species; operating a boat and outboard motor, and taking field notes. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel and experience diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems with outboard motors or generators is a plus. Applicants must have a valid drivers license.

Extended travel will be required at times to remote locations for fish sampling operations. This position involves walking up to ten miles a day over rugged terrain carrying a large backpack and along stream banks; standing and working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds with occasional lifting and carrying up to 80 pounds for short distances; and working in inclement weather conditions. Successful applicants need to possess excellent independent decision-making skills.

Applicants must be willing to accommodate a flexible schedule.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include assisting with gill netting, electrofishing, trap netting, and creel surveys throughout the region. Additional responsibilities include data entry, equipment maintenance (boats, nets, etc.), and interacting with the public. Work generally consists of a 40-50 hour week, Monday through Friday, with some night and weekend work required.  Some duties require extended stays overnight in remote locations. Opportunities to assist with data analysis, summaries, and technical writing can be made available to interested individuals.
