Editor's Note: This article is a follow-up on the grizzly bear captured near Garwood in August.
The two year old male grizzly bear that was captured near Silverwood, weighed in at 176 pounds. He was fitted with a tracking collar and released in the Cabinet Mountains near the Idaho/Montana border.
The grizzly bear spent the following three weeks along the Kootenai River just east of Bonners Ferry eating chokecherries and elderberries. Since the natural foods played out, he has been visiting fruit trees around Bonners Ferry and is particularly fond of plums. The bear has not killed any livestock and has shown no aggression towards humans. The bear continues to flee when seen by humans. The bear spends the days in heavy cover and feeds during the night. Two recent attempts to trap and relocate the bear have failed due to the abundance of fruit trees throughout the area.
