Idaho Fish and Game

Volunteers Needed for Sagebrush Seed Collection Efforts

idfg-mdemick
In August, the Soda Fire roared across 280,000 acres of southwest Idaho and southeast Oregon rangelands including critical habitat for sage-grouse, mule deer and dozens of other wildlife species. Now, volunteers can play a critical role in the rehabilitation of this special landscape. In the weeks ahead, volunteers will be collecting sagebrush seed at several locations, seed that will eventually be scattered across the burned landscape to re-establish sagebrush stands in critical areas, including documented sage-grouse lek areas. "We want to invite everyone, families and friends alike to join us for this effort, Fish and Game volunteer coordinator Michael Young commented. "This is a great excuse to get outside and enjoy the outdoors during the shortest days of the year, while doing something great for wildlife." Seed collection efforts will take place on a series of Saturdays, including November 14, November 21, December 5 and December 12. Young hopes to collect around 1,000 pounds of sagebrush seed during the four seed collection outings.
