idfg-mdemick
Idaho Fish and Game is piloting a two-day event entitled "Hunt Idaho: Connecting Mountains to Meals", a series of educational, hands-on workshops to connect people to the tradition of hunting. Anyone interested in hunting, from those that have never picked up a gun before and those whom have hunted for many years but would like to try a different aspect of hunting, are invited to attend. This event will be held Friday, August 21 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lewis-Clark Wildlife Club Shooting Range at 27007 Tom Beale Road near Lapwai and Saturday, August 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Idaho Fish and Game regional office at 3316 16th Street in Lewiston. Idaho Fish and Game and Lewis-Clark range staff will be available on Friday, August 21 starting at 2 p.m. to mentor participants as they shoot shotgun or try various rifle calibers. A barbeque dinner will be served starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 22 will include outdoor workshops at the Lewiston Wildlife Habitat Area and the Fish and Game regional office. "It can be overwhelming for a first-time hunter as they learn where to hunt, what to pack, how to choose the right weapon, and the techniques and regulations for the animals they wish to pursue." says Jerome Hansen, Clearwater regional supervisor. "Our goal is to help make the learning process easier by providing information within a series of workshops offered throughout this event." Lunch will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can attend for part of or the entire event. Emphasis will be given to wildlife biology and their habitat, hunting techniques and equipment, how to safely use, as well as how to care for and select a firearm for purchase. As the Ôconnecting mountains to meals' theme suggests, how to field dress, process, and cook your meat will also be covered. Participants will leave with the basic knowledge and experience to begin to plan a hunt on their own, and even introduce the tradition to friends and family. Specialized workshops will also be offered including horse packing, bear hunting, calling elk, traditional vs. modern archery, upland game bird, duck hunting, women in hunting, and much more. Families are encouraged to attend. Activities will be offered for kids such as BB gun shooting at the range and indoor laser shooting. Participants can pre-register by calling (208) 799-5010, or visiting the Lewiston Fish and Game at 3316 16th Street for an additional chance to win a rifle donated by Sportsman's Warehouse.
