Due to dry conditions, Idaho Fish and Game has closed the Gaiser Ranch shooting area, at the end of Redbird Road. It will be reopened in the fall once wetter conditions make it safe for shooting. Just a reminder, all parking areas on Craig Mountain WMA are closed for shooting due to high traffic use.
In 2026 anglers can expect continued opportunities to catch high numbers of smallmouth bass, with the potential for improved trophy fishing as well. The increasing number of juvenile bass observed during electrofishing surveys suggests there is plenty of 10–15-inch fish available to anglers seeking consistent action and high catch rates.
Looking ahead to 2026, anglers can expect more adult kokanee to be available than were present in 2025. However, fish will likely be somewhat smaller, averaging approximately 9–10 inches in length.
An Idaho Falls angler miraculously reeled in a new state catch-and-release record lake trout and, even more unbelievably, was able to hoist it up into the boat. Dylan Smith — the lucky angler in question — was fishing on Payette Lake in McCall on May 2 when a 43.25-inch lake trout took the line for a sprint.
Fish and Game biologists ask anglers to keep, kill and consume all walleye they catch outside of Oneida, Salmon Falls and Oakley reservoirs. People should also never move walleye between bodies of water, and they should report anyone who does. It’s not only illegal, it can be very harmful to other fish populations.
