Species Account:
Nest Site No. R04F15D05-07. 1989 July 1: No birds seen or heard in this area. 1989 August 5 and 6: At 2020, a fledge goshawk starts to "kak". The bird is only 100 ft away. It looks large, has a buffy supercilium and pale facial disc; its crown is striped, and dark streaks on its chest extend down to the lower belly. The undertail coverts are white with large brown spots on the sides; large brown spots are on the white leggings. Eye color is grayish. The juvenile flies to a lone Douglas fir. When a food-begging tape is played, it flies within 150 ft, perches, alarm-calls, and looks about. It then flies to the southwest to a clump of fir, calling continuously. Another young bird flies off a tree. The next morning, a young bird is in the same location at the northeast corner of the unit. It calls for a few minutes, then disappears to the east. 1989 Sept 1 and 28. No goshawks in the area. NOTE: The actual nest tree was never found. A few older stick nests exist within the unit.
