Observer saw both birds fly across the road, and noted large size, absence of "horns" and the large, round, grey facial disk. Observer is familiar with great-horned owls, and knew these were not great-horned owls.

Downslope is a wet-to-moist meadow, with alders; below that is the Palouse River. Upslope is a narrow stringer of mature, open-canopy Ponderosa pine (birds flew into that area); beyond the stringer was an old hayfield. Farther up the road is more timber
