The 2002 Craters of the Moon National Monument bird survey based on 166 point counts observed a total of 1357 individual birds of 63 species. Twenty-two percent (14 of 57) of the species recorded are listed as sensitive by the state of Idaho, the BLM, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, or are a Partners in Flight priority species. Migrant surveys were done for the first time this year and resulted in the confirmation of 29 additional species for the park.
