Abstract:

In Ireland Botrychiumlunaria (L.) Swartz has been found in grassy uplands, on rock ledges in mountainous areas, in dune grasslands and slacks, in heathy grasslands, and on some boggy tree-less areas. The fern is found in similar habitats in Britain. Throughout its range in these islands it is generally considered a plant of open places, but it has been found in a woodland habitat in Britain, on the Isle of Wight by W. A. Bromfield in 1841. On the Isle of Wight the plant grew "In rocky wooded ground under the cliff at East End, growing amongst dead leaves in the most shady recesses". In his History of the British Fems Newman (1844) commented on Bromfield's earlier discovery "I know of one instance only of its occurrence in a wood ... and from its rarity (this) becomes exceedingly interesting''.
