Abstract:

Observers counted 611 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the U.S. Breeding Segment of the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during fall 2014, a similar count to last year’s (610). The number of white birds in the Tri-state area (452) stayed about the same as last year’s count of 455. The total number of cygnets increased 24.5%, from 110 in 2013 to 137 in 2014. Cygnet counts increased from 2013 by 119.2% and 9.6% for Montana and Wyoming, respectively, while Idaho cygnet production decreased from that of 2013 by 17.8% to 23 birds. Malheur National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) conducted a ground survey this year and found 2 white birds and 1 cygnet. Eighteen white birds were observed at the Summer Lake Wildlife Management Area, which was a decrease of 25% from last year. Nevada did not provide data to this year’s swan survey. Precipitation throughout most of the Tri-state area was 70–150% of normal during winter 2013–2014. During the summer months, temperatures were 1–3 °F warmer than average and precipitation was 100–150% of normal, especially during June–August. Palmer Drought Indices for areas within the Tri-state area increased slightly for 2014.
