Abstract:

A presentation on the Research Natural Area (RNA) program was given at the RF&D meeting in Washington last January. The program was followed by a ceremony celebrating the establishment of the 250th Research Natural Area. As a result of these events, the Chief asked that the national RNA coordinators put together a strategic plan for the RNA program. R-6 has 39 established RNAs with over 90 more proposed in Forest plans. We support the importance of the RNA system for research, monitoring, and education, and feel it should play and increasingly important role in ecosystem management. Enclosed is a draft copy of the strategic plan for RNAs that was prepared in response to the Chief's request. The national coordinators are interested in suggestions for making the RNA program more effective and responsive to future needs.
