Abstract:

This report summarizes the results of bat survey efforts conducted during the summer 1998 bat activity season. SAIC is working with the U.S. Air Force to study spotted bat (Euderma maculatum) populations associated with Military Operations Areas in southwestern Idaho. This year's bat efforts were noninvasive and dealt principally with a continuation of gathering baseline ecological data on spotted bats in Idaho and testing various methods of recording spotted bats. Many previously determined spotted bat localities were resurveyed. The search for new spotted bat localities was conducted solely through the detection of audible spotted bat echolocation search calls. Activity across habitats and foraging behavior data were gathered similarly. Preliminary habitat and prey data were also collected. No attempts were made to capture spotted bats; no spotted bats were collected, captured, or handled during the 1998 season. Because of the more intensive summer effort directed toward gathering spotted bat data, mist netting for other bat species was conducted only once during the 1998 season. This was a very early season (early April) effort to try to collect information on seasonal bat movements through remote canyon corridors in Owyhee County and provide this information to the BLM and Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Despite a surprisingly high level of activity, no bats were captured at this time. One night roost was discovered for a likely Myotis sp. This year's efforts were very successful, however, in detecting new spotted bat localities. Spotted bats were detected at ten of eleven new survey locations as well as at all resurveyed areas.
