Abstract:

Several recent records indicate the range extension of the Barred Owl (Strix varia) into British Columbia, Montana, Washington, Oregon, and northern Idaho. Herein we describe the first known record of the Barred Owl in the southern portion of Idaho. On 17 June 1984 at 1945 an adult Barred Owl was observed in Ponderosa State Park. The park is located two miles northeast of McCall, Valley Co., Idaho. The bird was observed perched in a tree along the Huckleberry Bay Road at a distance of 15 m. During the observation, the owl vocalized with another Barred Owl just west of this sighting.
