Abstract:

The proposed highway reconstruction project is likely to adversely affect the known resident population of Coeur d'Alene salamanders near Kootenai Falls unless the effects are mitigated. The overall effects on species viability is unknown, however, due to insufficient knowledge of species abundance and distribution. The decision whether to proceed with Forest Service participation in the proposed project in consideration of possible adverse effects to this sensitive species rests with the responsible line officer, in this case the Regional Forester.
