Abstract:

This report summarizes available information on fire as an ecological factor for forest habitat and community types in northern Idaho. Habitat and community types are assigned to fire groups based on fire regimes and potential forest stand development after fire. An introductory section discusses relationships of major species (tree, shrub, herb, and animals) to fire, general considerations for fire management, and the ecology of persistent seral communities in northern Idaho. For each fire group, the authors discuss 1) vegetation, 2) forest fuels, 3) the natural role of fire, 4) potential patterns of forest stand development after fire, and 5) fire management considerations.
