Abstract:

"The range of the cliff chipmunk (Neotamias dorsalis Herron 2004) in Idaho was formerly believed to encompass only the Raft River Valley and Goose Creek Basin (Merriam 1897, Hall 1981, Piaggio and Spicer 2000, Piaggio and Spicer 2001, Herron et al. 2003, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game Conservation Data Center). In 2003 and 2004, we used several methods to conduct a cliff chipmunk survey: capture and release trapping, walking and vehicle surveys, and motion-sensitive trapping, walking and vehicle surveys, and motion-sensitive camera photo-points. We observed and trapped 42 cliff chipmunks in Idaho. Our survey enlarged and extended the cliff chipmunk range in Idaho from Rock Creek (Cassia County) east to Weston Canyon, Bannock Range (Franklin County), and from the Utah/Idaho border north to the Cotterel Mountains (Cassia County)."
