Abstract:

This plan was written to provide comprehensive guidance for the recovery and management of the boreal toad (Anaxyrus [Bufo] boreas boreas) and its habitat in the southern Rocky Mountains, where it was once common but, from about 1975 to 2000, experienced dramatic population declines. The plan summarizes biological information and status, including taxonomy, habitat requirements, life history, distribution and abundance, status, and factors leading to the species’ decline. The document sets out conservation objectives, and it recommends and describes numerous research and monitoring actions, as well as detailed protocols for species research and management. Strategies are also recommended for habitat management, such as for issues and effects related to air quality, water quality and features, mineral and heavy metal presence, roads and other corridors, recreation, livestock grazing, timber harvest, fire, and land exchanges. Following an extensive literature cited section, appendices contain conservation agreements that can be used and revised by federal, state, and private parties wishing to commit to implementing any portion of the plan.
